UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations

UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations (UK SMIs) are a comprehensive referenced collection of recommended algorithms and procedures for clinical microbiology. Our microbiology colleagues in Italy have kindly translated UK SMIs into Italian. To view the Italian translations, please visit the SIMPIOS website.

The NICE accreditation programme has closed. Please click here for information on how this will impact UK SMIs.

The Clinical Services Committee (CSC) within the British Infection Association (BIA) is developing a series of Infection Quick Reference Guides (IQRGs). These one-page flowcharts detail the essentials of initial investigation of common infective conditions and include: clinical assessment,  sample type and first- and second-line tests. These will aid the front door clinician to optimise investigations of common clinical conditions. BIA has collaborated with UK SMIs to include IQRGS within their standards where appropriate. The full list of IQRGs can be found on the BIA website.
