A resource for all
One of the key benefits of the Pathology Portal is that there’s no fee to join. The Portal is part of the Health Education England Technology Enhanced Learning's Learning Hub – people with an NHS or university email address can register on the Learning Hub or login with their elearning for healthcare (elfh) Hub details, where they can request Portal access. This access is directly available across all UK nations, and College members with other email addresses are also granted access. Content by experts
The haematology section of the Pathology Portal is packed with expertly curated resources written by current UK haematology consultants and trainees. This content covers a wide range of topics, including blood morphology, transfusion medicine, haemostasis and thrombosis. With over 900 resources available, users can dive into cases that combine whole-slide images of blood films, bone marrow aspirates and trephines with data interpretation, including immunophenotyping and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A variety of supplementary learning materials also includes teaching videos, recorded lectures and quizzes.
The Portal also offers recorded sessions, such as the nationwide beginner morphology teaching sessions hosted last autumn. These sessions provided a unique opportunity for trainees to engage with whole-slide images and ask questions to experts. Feedback from these sessions was overwhelmingly positive, with trainees noting how helpful the images and specialist guidance were.
Real-world applications
The Pathology Portal isn’t just an online learning platform – it’s also being used in real-world training environments. For example, the Pathology Portal was used to provide a virtual morphology station during a London Deanery ST3 morphology day. Trainees were able to review blood film slide images directly on the Portal, with annotated key findings to guide their learning.
Regional haematology centres have also been using the Portal to standardise teaching across their different training sites. By using the resources available on the platform, these centres can ensure that all trainees have access to high-quality, consistent teaching.
