To showcase careers across pathology specialties, we have begun a webinar series aimed at undergraduates and foundation doctors.

The College is delivering a rolling programme of careers webinars that feature a different specialty each time.

Since November 2023, the College’s Corporate and Public Engagement Manager, Penny Fletcher, has been working with 2 medical students to deliver a programme of pathology careers webinars. To date, 6 pathology specialties have been featured, with 1 or 2 speakers at each online event.

The hosts of the webinars are 2 medical students who are interested in careers in pathology – Zainab Shafiq, a fourth-year medical student at University College London (UCL), and Rosie Walsh, also a fourth-year medical student, who is based at the University of Manchester (UoM). Zainab chairs the pathology sub-committee of the UCL Medical Society and Rosie chairs the UoM Pathology Society. As well as introducing the speakers at each event and fielding questions from the online audience, Zainab and Rosie also do a fantastic job of helping to promote the events to their fellow students.

We are extremely grateful to all the College fellows and trainees who have volunteered their time to prepare and deliver talks about their careers for this series so far. We’ve had audiences of over 50 students at most of the events and feedback has been very positive. An attendee remarked, “It was nice hearing their journeys and their advice on how to get involved in histopathology. Thank you for organising this event.” Another, who attended the medical microbiology and virology webinar said, “I liked listening to the personalised stories of their career and how varied it was!”

We also record the sessions and put them on YouTube so those who are not able to attend at the time can still watch the talks.

Our upcoming webinar will focus on immunology and is scheduled for September. The event will be listed on our Public Events page when the date is confirmed. We’re keen to cover all the pathology specialties and to feature clinical biochemistry and the scientific training route at future events. We’d welcome members’ involvement in continuing to run and develop this event programme. Please contact Penny Fletcher if you have any ideas or would like to volunteer to give a careers talk.
