International Pathology Day 2025 − Poster competition

Sponsored by Diagnexia and inspired by the overarching theme of International Pathology Day, 'The global pathology workforce', poster entries focused on ‘Celebrating the impact of pathology’.

Our judging panel, Professor Tahir Pillay, Clinical Director of International Activities, Professor Marta Cohen, Vice President for Learning, and John Weldon, Director of Clinical AI at Deciphex, selected the winners below.   • first place – Waddah Ahmed, poster 18 titled 'Deep learning for automated malaria parasite detection: a cross-dataset validation study'
  • second place – Marina Sass, poster titled 'Architectural patterns and AKTs expression in HGSOC and HRD status'
  • third place – Dr Stephanie Zhang and Dr Jeanne Boissiere, poster titled 'Case report – malignant renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma'.

Entries

International Pathology Day 2024 − Poster competition

The theme of this competition focused on ‘Conquering superbugs: innovations in combating AMR’. The competition invited people worldwide to showcase what they have been working on individually or as part of a team, to highlight innovative research across the various pathology specialties.

A range of research ideas across all specialties was highly encouraged – from the event’s theme to more general pathology-related work that entrants are proud of and wanted to spotlight.

Professor Tahir Pillay, RCPath Clinical Director of International Activities, Dr Natasha Ratnaraja, Chair of the Medical Microbiology and Medical Virology Specialty Advisory Committee, and Dr Jeff Allen, RCPath Lay Advisor, evaluated entries based on a variety of criteria.

  • First place – Samiha Jainab, Natalia Raj, Dr Taufiq Hasan and Dr Farida Arjuman, titled 'HISTOSCOPE: AI-Assisted classification of breast cancer histopathology images'.
  • Second place – Abhishek Ranganathan and Sanjay Deshpande, titled 'Multidrug resistance in paediatric infections: problem and possible solution'.
  • Third place – Maria Vidhishia Rebello, Dr Sueallen Lorna D'Souza and Dr Nisha J Marla, titled 'From mosquito to microscope: a rare case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis in a 13-year-old'.

International Pathology Day 2023 − Poster competition

The theme of the 2023 competition was ‘Pathology in a changing climate.’ The competition gave the opportunity for people worldwide to showcase what they have been working on individually or as part of a team.

A range of research ideas across all specialties was highly encouraged – from the event’s theme to more general pathology-related work that entrants are proud of and wanted to spotlight.

Judges were, at the time of the compeition RCPath President-Elect Dr Bernie Croal, RCPath Lay Advisor Dr Jeff Allen and Dr Claire Gordon, Consultant in Infection for the UKHSA Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory, considered a variety of features and selected in:

  • First place – 'Deep penetrating naevus case report.’
  • Second place – ‘A pilot study on synchronous and metachronous multiple primary malignancies.'
  • Third place – 'Muscle involvement in lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma’.

International Pathology Day 2022 − Poster competition

The theme of 2022’s competition was 'Laboratory medicine in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases’. The competition provides the opportunity for people based nationally and internationally to enter a poster to showcase what they have been working on individually, or as part of a team.

A range of research ideas across all specialties was highly encouraged – from the event’s theme to more general pathology-related work that entrants were proud of and wanted to put in the limelight.

The digital poster competition sponsored by Sonic Healthcare UK invited international and UK-based entrants to submit a poster. A broad range of research ideas were welcome, whether inspired by the overall event theme, or describing other pathology-related work.

Posters were be judged by Professor Ismail Matalka, Clinical Director of International Activities, RCPath, and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at School of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan, Dr Hebah Ali, Education Lead for the Sponsorship and Histopathology International Trainee Support Schemes (ITSS), RCPath, and Consultant Haematopathologist, Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, and Dr Yuchun Ding, founder of X-WOW by night, Data Scientist at Cambridge University by day.

A range of features were judged – poster appearance and originality, scientific and medical content, and which entrant presents and communicates the message in their poster in the most professionally powerful way.
